Queen Charlotte Track, Marlborough -
Water, Wine and Walking
Sunday May 4 - Thursday May 8

New Zealand's Marlborough region has long been known for the beauty of the Marlborough Sounds and its world-class sauvignon blanc wines, offering rugged mountain ranges, fertile plains, intricate waterways and thriving aviation and aquaculture. On this tour you'll see the best of Marlborough and enjoy a taste of one of New Zealand's Great Walks - the Queen Charlotte Track.

5 May

Your one hour flight from Auckland lands in Blenheim late morning, where you'll get straight on the water with a cruise into Queen Charlotte Sound. Visit Motuara Island, a predator-free bird sanctuary, to encounter a variety of New Zealand native birds found nowhere else in the world. Stop by the salmon farm in Ruakaka Bay along the way to tonight's accommodation at Lochmara Lodge Wildlife Recovery & Arts Centre - a unique facility accessible only by boat where artists can create and exhibit work, with a gallery, art studio and sculpture trail set in native bush.

6 May

Put on your hiking boots for the start of the Queen Charlotte Track at Ships Cove, while your luggage is transported by water taxi to your next stop. Today's walk will be around 5 hours and a reasonable level of fitness is required. The trail from Ships Cove climbs steeply through virgin native bush dominated by nikau palms, rimu, totara and beech trees. From the ridge, descend into Resolution Bay before the gentle climb to Tawa Saddle. Look out over Endeavour Inlet before descending to the shoreline. Walk through the small settlement of The Pines to tonight's accommodation at Furneaux Lodge.

7 May

Today you will hike for around 4 hours, beginning with a small detour to the Furneaux Waterfall then re-joining the trail to Endeavour Inlet, the site of a mining operation at the turn of the 20th century. Most of the Queen Charlotte Track was originally used as a bridle track by local farmers and miners. Follow the coast around Endeavour Inlet into Big Bay and onto Punga Cove Resort for a late lunch, then take a water taxi to tonight's accommodation - Bay of Many Coves Resort. Here you will experience five-star dining at its very best as the sun sets across the bay.

8 May

Cruise back on the Sounds to the quaint harbor town of Picton. From Picton, you will stop by the Omaka Aviation Heritage Center, Sir Peter Jackson's collection of World War I planes set in an innovative theatrical treatment. Marlborough is New Zealand's largest wine growing region, and for lunch you'll visit Brancott Estate's Heritage Center, which overlooks the site of the first ever Marlborough sauvignon blanc planting. Nearby is Blenheim Airport where you'll take your flight back to Auckland for your onward travel home.
